Park Hyun-Kyung

Kim Jeong-Sun
Abstract
Purpose: This study was to identify the relationships between nutritional status, fatigue, quality of sleep, and depression of the patients in hemodialysis.

Methods: The participants were 200 patients, all older then 18 years old, undergoing hemodialysis 2 to 3 times per week on a regular basis as a treatment for chronic renal failure. Data were collected from April to July 2013 at a hemodialysis center of a hospital. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20.0 for Windows.

Results: Participants showed significant differences in nutritional status, fatigue, sleep quality, and depression according to exercise level, insomnia status, and level of appetite. Nutritional status was positively correlated with fatigue (r=.50, p<.001), sleep quality (r=.21, p=.003), and depression (r=.37, p<.001); fatigue was positively correlated with sleep quality (r=.46, p<.001) and depression (r=.56, p<.001); and sleep quality was positively correlated with depression (r=.50, p<.001).

Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that it is necessary to periodically evaluate the nutritional status, fatigue, sleep quality, and depression level of hemodialysis patients. Additionally, an integrated nursing intervention strategy should be sought to reduce fatigue and depression through improving the nutritional status and sleep quality of such patients.
